Overview
The Ranger is Hibernia’s primary dedicated stealth archer class, built around ranged damage, scouting, and picking targets of opportunity rather than standing in the front line. While it is often thought of as an archer archetype, Ranger is unique in that it is the only archer capable of wielding two weapons simultaneously through its Celtic Dual spec line. Players will enjoy playing Ranger if you like archer classes, enjoy playing solo, or enjoy playing traditional rogue archetypes. Be warned, Rangers are generally not preferred for group play outside of dedicated stealth groups.
Solo Playstyle
Ranger is one of the strongest solo and small-scale stealth roamers in DAoC, and that strength comes from how well they can control when a fight happens, not just how it ends.
Choosing Your Fights
A solo Ranger plays like a stealth-based opportunist skirmisher:
-
Stay hidden with stealth
-
Choose engagements carefully
-
Open fights from maximum bow range
-
Avoid fair fights unless heavily advantaged
-
Reset and disengage when things go wrong
Bow pressure: winning before melee starts
A major advantage is the ability to start combat at range:
-
Open with bow shots before being detected
-
Chunk targets before they can react
-
Force enemies into defensive play immediately
-
Finish weakened targets attempting to escape
Against cloth casters or lightly armored targets, a well-timed opening can decide the fight before it becomes melee at all.
Pathfinding = stealth survival toolkit
The Pathfinding line is a huge part of Ranger solo strength, providing both offense and survivability:
-
Dex/Qui self-buff increases attack speed and defense responsiveness
-
Instant speed boost is critical for disengaging or repositioning
-
Spec AF buff improves effective survivability vs melee and some casters
-
Self Strength buff improves melee damage and carry consistency
-
Damage add boosts sustained pressure in melee fights
Celtic Dual: the “what if they reach me?” answer
One of the most underestimated parts of the Ranger kit is Celtic Dual. If an enemy closes distance, Rangers can still fight effectively because:
-
Dual-wield pressure increases melee DPS consistency
-
Fast attack rhythm synergizes well with Dex/Qui buffs
-
They can still outtrade many lighter stealthers in sustained melee
This is what separates Rangers from pure ranged archetypes… they don’t instantly lose when someone reaches them. Instead, they transition into a decent melee skirmisher, especially against other stealthers or lightly armored targets.
If you can master the art of applying the Celtic Dual side stun (level 18 style), you can stun somebody, back up a few steps, and shoot them with your bow. This skill takes patience and practice but is deadly in the right hands.
Stealther Small Mans
In 2–5 player stealth groups, Rangers shine because they add:
-
Long-range opening damage (critical for initiations)
-
Target selection and finishing power
-
Stealth map control (spotting enemies first)
-
Flexibility between ranged and melee roles
While a few Rangers might be shooting from range, 1-2 might be using their Celtic Dual line to apply in-tight melee dps.
