Defensive Abilities
Guard
-
Guard is one of the most important defensive mechanics in group play. It’s a shield ability that lets the user attempt to block melee attacks aimed at another group member.
-
Guard is like “regular” blocking except there is no penalty caused by attacker counts. Shield size does NOT matter when guarding a group member.
-
Your guard chance is affected by dexterity, shield spec, and guard level (1, 2, 3)
-
The guard range is fixed to 256 units.
-
Attack range is 128 units + 32 (if attacker is moving) + 32 (if target is moving)
-
You can guard within an angle of 120 degrees
Example #1: Typical Guarding Angle
The player using guard is the green dot. The green shadow is the 120 degree angle in which you can guard somebody. The player being guarded is the blue dot. The attackers that you can guard against are the grey dots. The player that you can NOT guard against is the red dot. In this case, you can NOT guard against the red player’s attacks because he is outside of the 120 degree angle.
Example #2: Always in View Mechanic
Same as above except this time, the left gray dot can be guarded against even though he is outside of the 120 degree angle. The reason for this is a mechanic called “always in view”. When an attacking player is standing within 32 units of the guarding player, even if that attacker is not in the 120 degree guard angle, their attacks can still be guarded.
Example #3: Guarding Player’s View (of Guarded Player) Doesn’t Matter
In this example, the player using Guard (green dot) doesn’t have to have the target he’s guarding (blue dot) in view. As long as he is within guard range, he will block for that player per the 120 degree and “always in view” rules.
